Planting Fall Orders Without Asking for Orders

Planting Fall Orders Without Asking for Orders

This is a topic I love talking about, especially this time of year. As we get ready to wrap things up in the spring, it’s really important that we start planting the seeds for fall orders without actually asking for the order. The takeaway here is simple. We don’t need to be closing anything right now, but we do need to be guiding our teachers’ thinking so that those fall decisions are already formed. When everyone comes back in the fall, it should feel like we’re just wrapping things up, not starting from scratch.

The way we do that is by talking through likely needs for next year. And this is easier than most reps make it. Just look at what they did this year and ask if it applies next year. For example, if they started all their clarinets on Yamaha this year, do they expect to do the same thing next year? Are they expecting more or fewer clarinet players? If they leaned heavily toward three-quarter violins instead of half-size, is that trend continuing? These are simple conversations, but they give you a clear picture of what’s coming. That allows you to position your store and your inventory so you’re ready, instead of being surprised when everything hits at once in the fall.

The other critical piece is confirming preferences. One of the most valuable things we can earn is the teacher’s recommendation. When a parent asks where to go for an instrument, we want them sending that family to us. But that only happens if we’re aligned with what the teacher wants. That means confirming instrument brands, method books, and required accessories. Then making sure we actually have those things in stock. This is not about pushing a sale. It’s about preparation. But here’s the reality. When you do this well, your sales go up anyway, because you’ve made it easy for the teacher to recommend you with confidence. A little work now makes the entire rental season smoother and more successful.

Have a great week on the road!
